Client Brief
The original brief involved a detailed, high spec re-design of the existing rear basement space of a Victorian terraced house in the Ashburnham conservation area in Greenwich. This included a new lighting design, product sourcing and advice on all materials. In addition, the existing planning permission needed tweaking to include the bespoke glass extension.The client required crisp, clean lines and a design to maximise the natural light from the extension while enabling privacy from overlooking neighbours.
The project grew to include a complete re-design of the whole basement floor: re-planning the interior to create a guest bedroom with integrated bathroom, a snug and large modern kitchen/dining room.
The work was project managed from concept to completion.
Features of the project
We designed a contemporary kitchen concept including the addition of an internal window to connect with the original house.A bespoke oak staircase was designed with 'floating' glass sides and light sensors at floor level to illumate the path down to the new modern basement.
In the snug, the old chimney breast was opened up and a clean limestone fireplace installed.
Light fittings and radiators were carefully selected and placed to become architectural features in their own right. The overall lighting design cleverly utilises diffused natural light allowing it to flood into the kitchen/dining room space. The glass roof was sandblasted to create this effect whilst at the same time creating the essential privacy required by the client.
The specially designed bi-folding doors allow a seamless flow between the interior and exterior space which was re-inforced by use of ceramic flooring in both spaces to emphasis the illusion.
We also advised on garden design to accentuate and complete the transition from the interior to exterior living space.
